A
purpose dug club lake of around 6 acres at the edge of
the River Ouse, in pleasant quite surroundings behind
the local nursing college. This water is stream fed and
feeds into the River Ouse. There are two lakes on the
site, the club lake is the one nearest the river. Depths
vary from around 18" to 10 feet in the middle of the
lake. No fishing is allowed on the lake on the left.
The club lake has the record for the heaviest stocking
program in recent years. The main species in the lake
are the many recently stocked Bream and skimmers which
run to around 3lb. There are also Tench and Chub in the
lake which have grown to around the 4lb mark. There is
also a very large head of roach and rudd. Eels and pike
are present which have made their way into the lake during
recent floods along with some specimen Perch can also
be found around the weedier swims. Recent Perch specimens
recorded in matches have weighed around 2lb.
Groundbait or maggot feeder fished towards the middle can
account for some fine nets of fish. Pole or waggler fished
in areas from 3 to 4 feet can see good tench and roach.
Generally on this water, when the Bream are caught it indicates
a good days sport is on the cards. Bream a rarely caught
in ones, normally when Bream are caught a shoal has appeared.
Worm or caster hookbait left on the bottom will tempt the
many Eels which migrate to and from the lake. Little and
often is the best approach for the silver fish, and a sit
it out approach is best for the Bream. Maggot fished up
in the water whilst spraying maggot over the top will catch
rudd and chub.
