A
well attended and full featured lake made as a result
of the M62 flyover spanning the river calder. Depths
range down to 16 feet in places, extremely uneven on
the bottom with plenty of snags. The lagoon is on the
same water table as the River Calder and the water level
can rise and fall. The water quality is excellent, but
frequently the water becomes gin clear and fishing can
be hard. Pegs are well established and easy to fish from.
The main species sought at this venue are the carp and
tench, bollies are the most common bait. Although meat,
worms and corn are all productive especially if fished
close to features or behind the reed beds. It is well worth
noting that the fish in the particular lake are not "domesticated" as
those found in commercial fisheries and it is highly unlikely
that any of the Carp or Tench 5lb upwards would be landed
on present day pole equipment. There is also a very large
head of Roach, with practice and little and often feeding
specimens or "dog roach" can be taken from the crystal
clear areas between the weed beds on hooked hemp. There
is also a large amount of perch and small roach plus some
odd chub. In the milder weather the resident Bream show
to around 4lb and are colored almost black, however anglers
have dedicated whole seasons to catching the bream which
are very fickle and difficult to temp. Feeding on the shoals
of fry and smaller fish are the usual pike. There are lots
of jack pike which can become a nuisance, but easily targeted
with a spinner or plug, the larger specimens 10Lb and above
can be spotted from the banks hiding among the weed beds
and are easily taken with sea or coarse dead baits.
This water is occasionally closed for club matches or outside
bookings, so check match page, year book or local press.
